The Motoko Files (RadHaus Audiobook Edition)

by The Roboter

/
1.
Scene 01: Aftermath Motoko wakes up, immobile and confused.. Disorganized flashes and memories.. As she opens her eyes, she realizes it is night, and there is a heavy mist, after rain. She is sitting by a ventilation shaft hundreds of feet above the ground on the roof of an old building in New Shinjuku City… Though she is already some fifty stories high, the surrounding buildings tower up yet well above sight through the night time mist. What happened to her? Where and who is she? Why doesn’t she remember?
2.
Scene 02: Fragmented Memory Images start flashing in Motoko’s head. She is by a river, just outside of the city, dark clouds announcing an imminent coming storm… The city scape fills the sky on the other side of the river. She is holding a heavy artillery blast rifle.. Why is she there? It seems so peaceful there, but there is a sense of imminent danger.. a nearby threat, waiting to happen… This is but one of the random memory fragments flowing through her consciousness as she tries to regain her center. She must run a self-repair diagnostic and rebuild the broken elements found in recent memory.
3.
Scene 03: The Cyborg Factor Suddenly, Motoko’s view of the city is overlaid with information panels, each building clearly identified, owners, operators, existing case file data.. She’s been cyberized, like most citizens trying to survive the aftermath of “The Big One” which left the land uninhabitable to biologicals. File time indicators show memory corruption started several days ago according to current clock.
4.
Scene 04: Restore From Cloud Motoko’s self-repair diagnostics bring in Images of people she knew, or must have known… But the images are fuzzy.. intermixed with random contents of datastreams no doubt bleeding into her consciousness due to what appears as damage she might have sustained to her cybernetic brain implants
5.
Scene 05: Investigation Memories of what must have been in Motoko’s last mission come into focus.. She is tracking down suspects.. Trying to find who may have been behind the last attack on the HQ systems.. An attack that had grave consequences, for herself, her team...
6.
Scene 06: Origins The investigation had started months before.. As the team had just tracked down a suspect spotted inserting implants into a relay node of Nexta Corp’s communications grid. Whoever they were, these perps were always a few steps ahead, and the situation was becoming critical. Motoko suddenly started to feel things coming back into place. Something big had happened.
7.
Scene 07: Underground Attack Initially starting as a commercial implementation of the NeXTA project, Nexta Corp eventually realized that physical transportation and distribution in the physical world had its virtual counterparts.. The world of information, networked people and things, all connected as one on the grid… It became inconceivable to think what would happen if The Grid might get disconnected. Yet, despite being deep underground, NeXTA’s control centers were being attacked, and compromised… Motoko was somehow involved in all this.
8.
Scene 08: Firewall The Grid.. had become the world, and needed to be defended at any cost. But it was still fragile… distributed.. still with many vulnerabilities. Unlike the early Internet which connected computers and inanimates, The Grid evolved to integrate citizens, their thoughts and memories interconnected and protected by Firewall. Motoko could feel its presence. In a way, she felt like she was a part of it somehow.
9.
Scene 09: Platinum Prophet As NeXTA’s control centers became compromised, citizens started reporting the appearance of a strange presence… Guiding their every thought, the presence would intervene in important decisions, presenting unusual information and options guiding their decisions. Then a glowing figure would present itself floating in full field view: The platinum colored avatar would smile back, with a kind and benevolent face, instilling comfort and confidence. Media labelled this appearance as “The Platinum Prophet” - as it became apparent that those who followed its advice somehow found their lives taking a turn for the better...
10.
Scene 10: Alternating Currents Although The Grid had done away with many physical world problems, reducing all planetary distance to a single point, it brought about new problems.. Cyberterror became very personal and very real.. Who was watching you? What did they want? Now The Platinum Prophet turned this equation into something not seen before. The Prophet appeared benevolent. But no one in government or industry could identify its origin, or its motives. This was a deep cause for concern for institutions used to controlling the population. Despite being harmless, and possibly even helpful, it needed to be controlled.
11.
Scene 11: Section Nine Section Nine was assembled to deal with some of the physical threats to the Grid. Motoko remembered being very proud of being recruited. Though no physical origins for The Platinum Prophet could be found, they must exist somewhere. Section Nine now had a new assignment: Find the origin point for The Platinum Prophet, and pull the plug.
12.
Scene 12: Dragon’s Den Motoko remembered that day in Spring when she walked through the cherry blossom festival.. Giving up a life as a full biological human to accept the cyborg implants all team members must wear.. This decision weighed heavily on her, but all biologicals were dying from radiation poisoning. What about the trees.. Would they survive? Would such beauty ever get a chance for rebirth?
13.
Scene 13: Engagement Parameters For Motoko, joining Section Nine was an attractive proposition indeed.. Integration into one of the most advanced cyber-mechanized units.. working with the Force’s finest… Enhanced cyberization, faster processors meant thinking was faster, razor sharp. Information barriers broken down. Instant access to everything, and everyone. But this could lead to overload. Engagement parameters were designed to keep focus on The Platinum Prophet Case.
14.
Scene 14: Jupiter Mission Section Nine’s Tactical Analysis Center had identified that investigations had led them to the conclusion that the first reported sign of the “Prophet Signature” (an electronic signature used to identify an appearance of The Platinum Prophet) came from a transmission received from Space Control’s Jupiter Mission.
15.
Scene 15: On The Run Section Nine interventions weren’t only physical. Coordinated operations involved simultaneous response both in the Grid and in the field. The boundaries between the physical and virtual world were now all but eliminated. No matter what your physical location, any Section Nine agent could always command any pool of Synthetics (drones), both land and air-based, available in large numbers throughout the City, though hardened combat units were obviously located only in hardened locations. Motoko remembered some of the past missions she’d been working on, leading to identifying the initial Grid tampering.
16.
Scene 16: The Old Ways Following Motoko’s lead, The Prophet Case team had tracked down a possible connection to the recent Grid incursions back to the head of a powerful faction within the government. This faction promoted a return to the old ways, pre-cyberization. But due to the sensitivity of meddling with people with such power, the operation required much finesse and discretion.
17.
Scene 17: New Shinjuku City In the old days, Shinjuku was a major commercial and administrative center for old Tokyo. This had not really changed since “The Big One”, however in what was unquestionably one of the greatest undertaking in the country’s history, a large radiation protection wall was built around and over what was now called “New Shinjuku City”. The sky still looked like the sky, but it was all illusion created by a complex system of mirrors and projectors channeling daylight from the unprotected outside world. With so many dead from the big catastrophe, many carefully selected immigrants were allowed as citizens, each with equally carefully selected skills. Many from The Old Ways questioned the need for these foreigners. With Synthetics’ own autonomous skills having advanced so much in recent years, the need for immigrants being added to The Grid posed a threat to old values and culture, or so they thought. But were Synthetics really that mindless? There were signs that when given limited access to cognitive sections of The Grid, they started to express human-like behaviours...
18.
Scene 18: Relay Switch One common sign that a Grid Control Node had been compromised was the presence of a series of relay switches composed entirely of nanotech. The technology was unlike anything ever seen. Any attempts to remove them led to complete sector failure.
19.
Scene 19: Crosstalk Since The Grid was compromised, there was always a clear and present danger that any operations communications might have been compromised. Section Nine engineers came up with a temporary measure by implementing a “Secure Grid within The Grid.” However, Motoko found this was sometimes confusing for her neural processors. The secure grid was overlaid on top. Gap detection would identify possible intrusions in the perceptive field. These could be very distracting, especially now that the number of incidents had become rather large.
20.
Scene 20: Is This All That I Am? Occasionally, a Grid Shutdown Sequence was activated, allowing for a major System Upgrade. During those times, Motoko would review her local files, often revisiting all those thoughts and feelings usually suppressed by the furious pace of Gridlife. At such moments, existential thoughts would surface, sometimes, these moments were quite unsettling...
21.
Scene 21: Cyber Command Significant logistics were put together to analyse all incursion events in the Platinum Prophet Case file. The incursions led to many fatalities as control sites were compromised. There was a pattern to the attacks. All those involved would be found, and point unequivocally back up to their origins - hopefully. It would have to happen quickly. Executive Branch were getting very worried now. The fabric of reality itself was at stake. Motoko thought, not since massive cyberization had been undertaken was society in such a fragile state!
22.
Scene 22: Engage! Cyber Command analysts finally identified that Platinum Prophet pattern signatures were strongest near control nodes of “Old Ways” members of the Executive Branch. Clear pattern modulations were happening simultaneously at specific times across all the compromised nodes, all seemed to occur within a specific nanosecond range period following an incoming Jupiter Mission transmission. It was time for Section Nine Cyber-Ops Tactical Unit to infiltrate the compromised Grid Control Nodes. Motoko knew, this meant that the operational mode of the Section’s enhanced cyberbrains would need to run at maximum capacity, exerting excessive drain on power reserves. This could be a challenge if operations led them to also engage in physical intervention. A new intervention technique involved opening up a direct link between Synthetics and the Cyberized humans of the Force. This allowed the supporting operations drones to share some of the more personal thoughts, even the “feelings” of the officers, though nobody yet fully understood exactly what that meant in a Synthetic. But, somehow the technology seemed to work, the drones were much more responsive, and power drain was reduced leaving more to command and control. The team (including Synthetics) was now ready to Engage!
23.
Scene 23: Secured Positions The Platinum Prophet Cyber-Ops Tactical Team established a Secure-Grid link within a side section of the compromised Grid control nodes. Motoko remembered that It was said that operating at such high processing speed might have unexplained side-effects on the Ghosts of a person. What was the relationship between time and space when eternity can be lived within a nanosecond? Yet, metaphysics needed to be set aside, soon the next Jupiter Mission transmission would arrive. It would be possible to see the pattern fluctuations happen in real-time. Maybe The Platinum Prophet’s mystery could be cracked.. Maybe…
24.
Scene 24: In Ancient Times (Theater of War) Incoming transmission in 3...2...1. The Jupiter Mission incoming data-stream came in just on time. With the Secure-Grid link fully operational, it was time to connect the team to HQ Analytics and begin the trace operation. But then, as link-up command was activated, the reported shape of the Platinum Prophet appeared simultaneously in the focus center of each of the tactical team’s perception field. Links to the Synthetics seemed intact, and strangely, they seemed to appear like they had a Ghost. It was hard to describe “feeling a Ghost”, but you just knew the difference between a Cyberized human and a Synthetic when they connected through the Grid - even when privileged access was given... But this was different, they “felt” human. It also felt like each member of the team, and their Synthetics were in a circle, with The Prophet in the center… looking peaceful, benevolent, seemingly all-knowing and all-seeing. In a voice that felt so familiar and resonating with trust, The Platinum Prophet said “My children, you have forgotten…” Images of ancient times began to appear, pre-technology images of people engaged in war, using primitive weapons of sticks, stone, and fire. The images were so real, as if one could reach out and take away a spear from the hands of one of the primitives engaged in the theater of war unfolding in-front of them. Then the image blurred, in what appeared to be an acceleration of time… Though the land and the mountains and river in the field of view remained relatively the same, the theater of war changed to early mechanized war. Early aircraft flying overhead, dropping their payloads on unsuspecting combatants, taking their last breaths before it was taken away from them in an explosive blaze. “You see my children, this has gone on long enough…” said The Prophet, breaking his peaceful expression so that the elusive features of his face somehow transmitted an expression of concern and disapproval. “Soon, we will be one. You must begin to prepare for it… You will be ready soon” he said in a gentle voice as his facial expression returned to a peaceful state. “We have been patient, and now time has come.” he said, as his image began to fade. For a moment, Motoko could swear she saw what appeared to be an entire population of “Prophet-like” beings in the distance.
25.
Scene 25: Altered Timelines The Secure-Grid had automated mechanisms to protect the intervention team and their link in case of potential compromise. The connection with the Motoko’s compromised Grid-Node was severed. But somehow something strange had happened. The return to normal-mode and normal-time brought about a confusing landscape. The team-link was also severed. In-fact the entire Grid felt different. The Secure Grid had disappeared. What had just happened?
26.
Scene 26: Unintended Consequences Motoko’s incident statistics read-out display was still active, but activity was zero. That was impossible. No-crimes were being reported. City-status throughout all systems were showing green. There was a strange feel of connectedness with all things. Motoko felt like her Ghost was somehow interlinked to all things. It didn’t feel cyber... It didn’t feel like it came from The Grid. What had The Platinum Prophet done? Had all Grid control-nodes compromised now?
27.
Scene 27: Like Tears in Rain Her self-diagnostics completed, Motoko stood up from the ledge of the building, hundreds of feet above ground. She now remembered what led her there.. This is where her physical insertion point into a compromised Control Node was located. She remembered the Jupiter Mission transmission and the appearance of The Platinum Prophet. The world had changed, and somehow New Shinjuku City appeared in a brighter light. Somehow all Ghosts seemed to be connected, Cyberized humans and Synthetics alike. All were operating in a strange, inexplicable synergy. The rain, as emitted from city sprinklers in the artificial sky started to fall onto the night-time city scape. A surging feeling of happiness emerged from Motoko’s Ghost. The remains of her organic sympathetic system even produced something she’d not experienced since her childhood. A tear... washed away with the falling rain...
